LA Mart, Benjamin Moore team up for Color Experience Design Challenge for students

The LA Mart Design Center at the Reef is proud to announce the first Color Experience Design Challenge in collaboration with Benjamin Moore. The event is a vehicle for area college-level design students to showcase their talent and highlight how current color trends can be incorporated into everyday living spaces.

Students from California State University, Long Beach, and the University of California, Los Angeles ASID, are participating in this competition. Each team will be assigned one of four vignettes: Outdoor / Indoor Living Space; Living Room; Dining Room or Bedroom. Working with a materials budget of $20,000 each, the teams will develop concepts — and stage room vignettes — using furnishings from the LA Mart Design Center showrooms and paint from Benjamin Moore.

“We are delighted to be announcing this exciting new collaboration with Benjamin Moore as a way of nurturing new design talent,” said Frank Joens, SVP, General Manager, LA Mart. “The Color Experience Design Challenge will not only highlight local up-and-coming designers, but will provide students with a coveted opportunity to interact with vendors and source high-end products. The finalists will get to oversee their vision’s buildout at LA Mart. Equally important, we expect the Design Challenge to be a great resource for LA Mart shoppers looking for inspirational and fresh new ideas to bring back to their own projects.”

A panel of professional judges — including Bobby Berk HGTV Designer; Jeannie Chung, Design Blogger; and Fernando Diaz, ASID Interior Designer—will select the finalists, one from each vignette category, and further cull these four finalists to declare one Grand Prize winner. The finalists’ concepts will be spotlighted as part of LA Mart Design Center’s Designer Week to be held from April 2-7. Selection criteria for the finalists will include the best use of color and space; creativity and originality; presentation; team name, branding and use of social media; along with an effective use of materials budget.

Complementing the challenge, Benjamin Moore will host a special Color Trends 2017 seminar with Kali Sipes-Pleasant at 11 a.m. April 4.

Two additional recognitions will be presented as a part of the Color Experience Design Challenge: The Social Media Engagement Award, to be judged by members from LA Mart Design Center and Benjamin Moore, will be presented to the team that best showcases their creative process, their team brand and their collaboration with LA Mart, on social media. In addition, a People’s Choice Award will be presented to the team voted as the favorite by LAMDC attendees from March 18 – April 7. Designers and buyers who vote for the People’s Choice recognition will be eligible to win a two-night stay at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.
