Chicago’s Field Museum tabs sports and entertainment firm to lead retail operations
Retail operations at Chicago’s Field Museum will soon be under the leadership of the same firm that oversees retail for some of the Windy City’s most prominent sports names, including the Cubs and Bulls.
On Jan. 1, 2019, Rank + Rally will take over retail for the Field Museum from Aramark, which has overseen retail there for the past five years, reported the Chicago Tribune. Duties will include the museum store, O’Hare International Airport store and online retail sales.
Expected changes include stocking more “local brands” and developing more day-to-day items. Also, Rank + Rally wants to put an emphasis on employee training and in-store events.
“Rather than it just being a transaction, we want to create an experience,” Rank + Rally President Catherine Cronin told the Tribune.
The article goes on to quote Museum Store Association board of directors president Ione Saroyan. She pointed out that, while some museums do outsource retail operations, it can be tricky to maintain the institution’s mission throughout the store when it’s handled by an outside firm.
