Black Panther: The newest addition to comic book superhero elite?
Variety magazine has a recent article on the subject. Author Ricardo Lopez speculates if the success of the blockbuster film and, perhaps more so, the cultural significance of the first big-budget black superhero film, would thrust the character’s ever-lasting popularity to that of Spider-Man and Captain America.
“In the case of ‘Black Panther,’ box office (performance) is a reflection of the pop culture moment and the cultural moment that this film is making in America right now,” Adam Biehl, VP of global brand strategy and marketing at Hasbro, was quoted in the story.
Box office success doesn’t always translate to merchandise success, Lopez wrote, but it appears probable in this case. Licensed Black Panther merchandise will be popular this year and perhaps beyond, and that includes costumes for Halloween and toys for birthdays and holidays.
“There are also costumes sold by Rubies and Party City, six months ahead of Halloween,” Lopez wrote. “Other items, for kids and adults alike, include Black Panther masks, Funko collectible figures, shoes, jewelry, coffee mugs — and soup.”
