Airport retail spending could approach $50 billion by 2021
Many of us have found ourselves in an airport with time to kill. A recent Global Data Retail report showed travelers not only are browsing airport retailers, they are buying, too.
Worldwide airport retail spending reached $38 billion in 2016, with the upward trend projected to continue in the coming years. Global Data estimated spending will reach $49 billion by 2021.
“Apart from the growing number of air travelers, increased security over recent years delivers a constantly changing captive audience for airside retailers, which claim 83% of all spending in airports,” said Maureen Hinton, Group Research Director at Global Data Retail. “This audience has time to kill and, especially when on holiday, is in the mood to spend.”
