Wonder Works in Charleston, N.C.
Q: What makes your store unique?
A: Featuring specialty toys, gifts, books and gadgets that inspire one's imagination, creativity and sense of wonder is an important part of the Wonder Works atmosphere. Many of the store's 2,500 toys are on display for hands-on play, and creation of new store sections such as a local "Straight from the Lowcountry" section, help entice adults to shop while their children play.
Q: What is your retail background?
A: My very first job in a retail business was in high school. I later went into the healthcare field in Occupational Therapy and Hospital Marketing. My strong science, nature, arts and crafts and developmental background led me to create a store environment where one immediately feels at home, happy and playful.
Q: What is the most popular product you sell?
A: Depending on the current trends (Silly Bandz, Webkinz, Pop or Slap watches, mini erasers, etc.), any one of these items can have a strong impact on a store's bottom line. Being aware of the trend, displaying it correctly with signage and going big in ordering and selection is extremely important during a trend's hot cycle. However, one non-trend item, the frog ecoaquarium by Wild Creations, has consistently been a strong seller for the past two years with no signs of slowing down.
Q: What is your favorite part about working in this industry?
A: My very favorite part is when I am able to help my local community, such as gathering 7,000 toys for the local children's hospital's toy cart via my store's extra supply of toys and through my vendors. To know that you never have to say "no" to anyone in need of a donation, that you can change someone's life via a toy -- that's incredible. The economic impact one local store can have in the community is incredible.
Q: What advice do you have for other retailers?
A: Do not be afraid to think big, help your community in a big way and get involved in causes that come in your store door and tug at your heart. You will be amazed when you give, as it comes back tenfold to your business. Your future and growth depend on you keeping an open mind, being willing to truly help your community and having fun during the process. Also, develop your staff -- they will help your business grow. |
