INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT
Tommy Lee Brown
Director of Retail Operations
Saint Louis Zoo Gift Shop Manager/Buyer
St. Louis
Q: What makes your store unique?
A: With any retail store I have ever run, the staff is what makes the location unique. Without a trained, intelligent and friendly staff, your location will be doomed. Your staff is the personality, the reflection on your institution and usually the first and last people guests see from your attraction.
Q: What is your retail background?
A:It is funny because I studied Japanese language and culture in Tokyo and double majored in international communications and Religious Studies at Maryville University in St. Louis and SWIC with an Associate in Theater/Set Design, and after all that I ended up in the greatest career anyone could ever have in themed retail.
I started with Dillard's department stores as their Visual Manager and later took a position with Six Flags Theme Parks as their visual merchandiser/designer and worked up the ranks with corporate design. After eight years I took a job with the Saint Louis Zoo as their Gift Shop Manager/Buyer and have been here ever since. So I have truly done everything in retail from designing/merchandising stores and fixtures to staffing and running the sales floor.
Q: What is the most popular product you sell?
A: Jewelry is by far the No. 1 item at the Saint Louis Zoo.
Q: What is your favorite part about working in this industry?
A: The people and the ability to be creative. Every day is something new and exciting.
Q: What advice do you have for other retailers?
A: I have never felt that my job is work but more of an adventure. Remember most of us are selling fun, making memories or teaching guests that visit our attractions, so never be too serious and remember to make the work place a place where staff and guests want to come back to again and again. |
